With a little creative interpretation, referrer logs can provide information on: how users have found the website (e.g. from a link on a partner site or through a search engine), browsers used to view the website, the keywords (queries) entered into a search engine used to find the website, other website’s frequented by the user. If a webpage has no referring URI, the address may have been entered by hand or a user has clicked-through from an email. Referrer blocking software will also result in a empty referrer record.

A robots.txt is a permissions file that can be used to control which webpage’s of a website a search engine indexes. The file must be located in the root directory of the website for a search engine website-indexing program (spider) to reference.
The robots.txt file contains instructions (directives) that are read by spiders. Directives can be written to apply to all spiders or only target spiders from a specific search engine. If a website has no robots.txt file, then a spider will follow links from the webpage that has been registered with its parent search engine to index the website content.
A rollover is a feedback cue activated when the cursor is positioned over a particular part of a webpage. Feedback cues may include a visual effects: change in color, image or sounds events. An area on a Web page that triggers an event when the user moves their cursor over it and/or clicks on it. The event can appear directly over the original item or on another area of the page. Every rollover has a a Normal state (no action), and one or all of these states: Over (mouse over), Down (mouse down), or Out (mouse up). Also known as a “mouseover.”
A disjointed rollover is where the visual-feedback does not correspond with the location of the cursor. The use of disjointed rollovers may be required when navigation labels are shortened (due to screen-width); a description can be displayed underneath or alongside navigation text to provide more information on the section’s content.

This includes: attractor design creating copy and imagery to drive a user to click-through to a website, paid placement or pay-per-click (PPC), determining where a website should be promoted to attract an audience , search engine optimization developing web content to achieve a high ranking in search engine results pages (SERP).
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an act of of increasing the the number of visitors to a particular Web site by adding appropriate keywords and phrases, and such ranking high in the search results. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that your site will be found by a search user. For general and competitive web sites it takes a lot of professionalism to tweak the web site in order to be well optimized and search engine friendly.
In the early days of the web, search engine optimization involved carefully crafting metadata, setting up link farms and building reciprocal links to improve a website’s popularity―Google, for one, factors the number of links that point to a webpage (incoming links) when calculating relevance ranking (Page Rank).
As the search industry has matured, additional factors have come into play including: invisible content, such alternative texts for images; webpage filename/address (URL); syndication of content through blog’s; use of structural markup; and paid placement such as Google’s AdWords service.
Information is sent to a server to be processed. With server-side scripting, completing an activity involves sending information to another computer (server) across the internet. The server then runs a program that process the information and returns the results, typically a webpage. Search engines use server-side processing. When a keyword is sent, a program on a server matches the word or phrase entered against an index of website content. (To complete the same search as a client-side process would require the browser to download the entire search engine program and index.) Server-side scripting languages include ASP and PHP.
This is the type of server software that is running on the server. Windows 2000 server, Linux and Unix are common server types. If you have a basic website then the server type does not matter. If you have a more complex website that has database functions and serves up dynamic pages, then the server type will be more important.

A Shopping Cart is a program or a series of programs that let visitors to your site make selections from more than one page before sending in that order. A shopping cart on the Web works just like a shopping cart in the real world–on each page, your customer can “put things into the shopping cart” but not have to actually pay for them yet. As they go from area to area of your online store, they can add more items or put items back. Finally, they get to “check-out” where they place their combined order. Shopping cart programs were originally developed by individual programmers, and could be fairly expensive, which included credit card verification, the ability to handle large numbers of customers without getting their orders mixed up, various shipping and handling options, etc. These “off the shelf” products cost anywhere from $250 to $5,000 depending on the complexity and number of items in the store, but are all much less expensive than having custom work done. Shopping cart programs need to reliable and easy to use for the retailer. More sophisticated systems establish customer accounts to reduce the amount of information a user has to enter to complete a transaction.
Go for the shorter name if you can get a meaningful one, but don’t averse to longer names. However, you should avoid extremely long names verging on 67 characters. Aside from the obvious problem that people might not be able to remember such a long name, it would also be a chore typing it and trying to fit it as a title on your web page.
A sitemap provides an overview of website content in a manner similar to the contents page of a book. Sections and pages are typically listed according to narrative flow, if the author intends for pages to be read in a specific order; or alphabetically or by chronology if content pages are essentially unrelated. The later is the case in news website’s, where articles are often archived by topic, and then by title or publication date.
A social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friendship, sexual relationships, kinship, dislike, conflict or trade.
In online communities, connections to particular forums or sub-communities are implicit. Members connect with forums by reading or participating in them, but do not make their preferences of forums explicit in the community. The same is true with people in the community. Relationships in traditional communities are rarely made explicit. Everyone has their favorite members and forums, but that information is not shared with the community.
Social networking, on the other hand, enables individual members to share explicit relationships with people and forums. Members use their home pages as rich representations of their preferences- which enable them to express their identity through explicitly shared forum membership and connections to other members.
Further, forums within a community display explicit links to those members who have chosen to join the group. In this case, the forum becomes an aggregator of all the members who have chosen to join and links directly to their personal home pages.
Spiders and Robots (or “bots”) are simply automated programs that explore the Web, looking for information. The most common kinds of Spiders are the ones that collect Web addresses for the Search Engines to catalogue. The only time that you as a marketing manager are likely to have to think about these Spiders is when you’re trying to get your site listed in a search engine, or avoid having some test pages on your Website automatically catalogued by a search engine before you’re ready. If you do want to create a test area on your Website and you want to keep Spiders out until it’s finished, you’ll need to tell your Web Administrator so they can put up a special “keep out” sign for these automated programs.
Macromedia Flash application architecture enables a third type of scripting/interaction. Flash can store and process information both client-side and server-side. An example of this interaction is a Flash-based checkout process. Information the user enters (such as delivery and billing addresses, credit card details, etc.) can be stored and validated client-side. Once the required information has been completed a connection is established to the server and the order sent for processing.
The flow of data from a server to the visitor’s own computer. Streaming allows for a graphic animation to start right away while the rest of the file downloads in the background, rather than waiting first for the entire file to download before viewing.
Most things on the Web, including almost all of the search engines and the directories, require the marketing manager to do the same kinds of promotion they would do via press releases.
